The Light Goose Conservation Order (LGCO) is a special season created to combat the overpopulation of snow geese, Ross's geese, and blue geese. These populations have exploded to the point where they are literally eating themselves out of house and home on their Arctic breeding grounds.
Why We Hunt The Conservation Order
The sheer number of geese on the tundra is destroying the fragile ecosystem. It takes decades for the Arctic vegetation to recover from overgrazing. By participating in the conservation order, hunters act as a necessary management tool to help bring the population back into balance with what the habitat can support.
Different Rules
Because the goal is population reduction, the rules during the spring conservation order are different than the regular fall duck and goose seasons:
- No Bag Limits: There is no daily bag limit or possession limit.
- Unplugged Guns Allowed: You are not restricted to 3 shells. Extensions tubes are legal.
- Electronic Calls Legal: We run massive electronic caller systems (e-callers) to pull down high-flying flocks.
- Extended Hours: Hunting is allowed from a half-hour before sunrise until a half-hour after sunset.
What to Expect
Spring snow goose hunting is a numbers game. We put out massive decoy spreads—sometimes numbering in the thousands—and use loud e-callers. When a "tornado" of hundreds of geese funnels down into the spread, the noise and chaos is an experience unlike any other in North American hunting.
