We love a first-timer, but a few things will have the whole blind shaking their heads — and send every duck in the county somewhere else. Leave these at home:

Hunter wearing a bright safety vest that is too visible for duck hunting
Mistake 01

A Bright Orange Safety Vest

Ducks aren't highway workers. Wear camo or drab earth tones. If it glows, it goes.

Bottle of strongly scented cologne that should be left out of a duck blind
Mistake 02

Cologne, Perfume & Strong Detergent

Skip the aftershave and wash your hunting clothes with unscented detergent. Strong fragrances do not belong in the blind.

Untrained dog disrupting a waterfowl hunt
Mistake 03

A Barking, Off-Leash Dog

A trained retriever is gold. A squirrel-chasing pup is a duck-repelling machine. Talk to Jeff before bringing your own dog.

Bright cell phone screen glowing inside a dark hunting blind
Mistake 04

A Phone With the Screen Blazing

That blue glow wrecks your night vision and can spook birds. Keep your phone pocketed and on silent.

Hunter taking a selfie while wearing shiny reflective gear
Mistake 05

Shiny Gear & Selfie Sessions

Movement and glare are two things ducks notice fast. Keep reflective rain gear and mirror sunglasses covered, and pose later.

Open coffee thermos at risk of spilling in a crowded hunting blind
Mistake 06

An Open, Sloshing Thermos

Bring the coffee, but screw the lid down tight. For the love of the hunt, do not knock it over in the blind.

Show up simple, quiet, and camouflaged — and let the guide do the fancy stuff. That's how you come home with stories and, hopefully, a limit.
