Hunting gear

The Essentials

  • Hunting License: Missouri small game hunting license AND Missouri migratory bird permit.
  • Federal Duck Stamp: Required for all waterfowl hunters 16 and older.
  • Shotgun: 12 or 20 gauge. Make sure it's plugged to hold no more than 3 shells total.
  • Shells: Non-toxic shot only. We recommend size 2 or 3 for ducks, BB or BB for geese. Bring at least 2 boxes per day.

Clothing & Gear

  • Waders: Chest waders are highly recommended. Insulated for late season, uninsulated or breathable for early season.
  • Camouflage: Dress in layers. The weather in the Bootheel can change quickly. Good patterns include Mossy Oak Bottomland, Realtree Max-5, or Sitka Timber.
  • Face Mask or Face Paint: White faces flare birds. Cover up.
  • Blind Bag: To keep your gear dry and organized.
  • Ear Protection: Protect your hearing in the blind.

The Extras

  • Snacks and drinks for the blind
  • Thermos with hot coffee
  • Camera or phone (kept in a waterproof case)
  • Hand warmers for late season hunts
  • Cooler to transport your harvested birds home
